Tokyo-born guitarist Kaori Muraji is still a teenager, and a big star in her native country. Here she hooks up with one of the UK’s crack choral collectives in a programme laced with arrangements aimed squarely at what might be termed a ‘quality crossover’ market.
Not everyone, however, will approve of the decision to rip Requiescat, one of Oscar Wilde’s most touching lyrics, out of context, requisitioning it as harmonised text-fodder overlaying Mauraji’s finger-picked traversal of Pachelbel’s Canon. You will certainly need a sweet tooth to take it.
Better are Muraji’s deft solo takes on Villa-Lobos’s Preludes 1, 2 and 5, but it’s hard to follow why Nos 3 and 4 have Dowland’s ‘Flow my tears’ and ‘Weep you no more’ implanted in them. Tallis and Borodin are among others subjected to similar ‘arrangements’. Neither Muraji nor The Sixteen emerge from this commercial collaboration with much credit. Terry Blain
