Bloch: Macbeth

Unlike his later Jewish-inspired works, Bloch’s opera draws heavily upon Debussy (especially Pelléas), Mussorgsky and Wagner, yet offers a dramatically cogent adaptation of Shakespeare’s drama. Although lacking the last ounce of sophistication, the performance, recorded live at the German premiere of the work in 1998, has considerable immediacy, but the absence of a libretto in the booklet is a major disadvantage.
