This 1977 recording is a classic, with a uniformly excellent cast – especially Donath’s sparkling Mistress Ford, Claes Ahnsjö’s exquisite Fenton, Brendel’s boiling Ford and Ridderbusch’s bumptious Falstaff. Though Kubelík rushes the gentle ‘O süsser Mond!’ chorus both in the final act and in the overture, he is otherwise attentive to every detail of Nicolai’s balance of romance and hearty fun.
