This is classic Penderecki, before he abandoned his modernist, monolithic style and went all neo-Romantic. The Devils of Loudun, written for the Hamburg Opera in 1969, sets John Whiting’s dramatisation of Aldous Huxley’s novel in German translation, and Penderecki uses all his resourcefulness in the portrayal of a world of witch-hunting hysteria, exorcisms and black Masses. This recording, made at the time of the premiere, is vivid, with Troyanos a gripping Jeanne. Matthew Rye
