Albinoni: Oboe Concertos, Op. 7/3, 6, 9 & 12, Op. 9/2, 5, 8 & 11

Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was a contemporary of Vivaldi’s who, like him, was a born Venetian and wrote many operas, cantatas and instrumental pieces; among the latter were the earliest published oboe concertos. It was an excellent proposition to record them all in such superb performances and recordings, and the value for money is good, when many companies are still content to sell CDs with fifty-odd minutes. To add to this banquet are superbly professional notes by Michael Talbot. The disc is a genuine addition to the scholarly and musical library of Venetian Baroque and most welcome.

Since the purpose of this CD is also didactic, the listener ought to realise that to play seventy minutes of Baroque oboe concertos without a break is to risk a serious case of musical indigestion. The disc was surely not made primarily for that kind of listening. But it is a very good CD to have in your collection and a model of scholarly and musical interpretation (the continuo is cleverly shared out between archlute, theorbo, guitar and harpsichord).
