A valuable collection of best and less well-known Delius.Mackerras's readings are more sharply focused than most.In La Calinda, from Florida, for instance, one is very aware of the bird-like woodwind pirouetting and twittering which gives the dance an appropriately natural, out-of-doors quality (and Mackerras's Florida 'Sunset' dance is excitingly wild and abandoned, and his tropical 'Night', sensuous and fragrant). You feel the crystalline chill of winter and rejoice at Spring's burgeoning and the bird song in North Country Sketches; but I prefer Barbirolli's more tenderly romantic view of the ‘Walk to the Paradise Garden’, more sympathetic to the plight of Delius's characters.
