Frankel: Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 3 (with introductions by the composer)

Frankel is one of that growing band of English composers whose music has been described as ‘unjustly neglected’, probably because his eight symphonies (written between 1962 and 1972) have been eclipsed by the 100 or so film scores he wrote during his life. These two works show Frankel to be far more removed from the English pastoral tradition, not least in the use of serial techniques. This is accessible music, however, often tuneful and dramatic, not unlike updated Mahler but without the wry humour. Christopher Lambton
