Stalin’s cultural repression did strange things to composers. Here’s a ballet score that, apart from the occasional Prokofiev-like orchestral touch, could have been written by Tchaikovsky or Borodin. Its date? 1949. The 1952 Horn Concerto (admirably played by Richard Watkins) is even more backward-looking. Downes and the splendid BBC Philharmonic are wasted on such ephemera – this repertoire is no match for Glière’s fine symphonies, already recorded by the same forces to great acclaim. Matthew Rye
