Kancheli: Symphony No. 6; Symphony No. 7 (Epilogue)

This CD is not for the faint-hearted. It comes with a warning of extreme dynamic changes and, if you set the opening of the Sixth Symphony at anything higher than pianissimo, watch out for your equipment (and your hearing) in the sudden violent outbursts. There’s a pervasive Georgian folk quality, a simplicity of expression and a serenity bordering on stasis, but there are also passages of elemental vehemence. Intriguing music, splendidly played and recorded. Wadham Sutton
