Shostakovich: Suites from The Gadfly, King Lear & Hamlet

This marvellous disc has introduced me for the first time to the stunning Korean Broadcasting Service SO. With a vivid recorded sound, the players bring to life all the humour and pathos of these film and theatre suites, from the Fool’s quirky variations on a folksong (aka ‘Jingle Bells’) in King Lear to the dark Romanticism of the often Tchaikovsky-alluding Gadfly score.
