Strauss: Symphony in D minor; Symphony in F minor

The older Strauss scathingly described Brahms’s symphonies as ‘empty shells’. As a teenager, however, he was an admirer, and even presented his F minor symphony to the older composer who grudgingly admitted it was ‘not bad’. It is more interesting, certainly, than the earlier D minor, but there is no hint of the mature composer lurking around the corner. Christopher Lambton
