Telemann allows his prodigious musical wit full rein on the two overture-suites that open and close this disc. Both the G major ‘des Nations anciens et modernes’ and the B flat major ‘Völker-Ouvertüre’ begin in the grand French style then proceed to lively, tongue-in-cheek character-sketches of various nationalities. The alluring Viola Concerto, with its darker hues, brings out his gift for melodic invention, while both the concerto and sonata for two chalumeaux exemplify his dextrous use of instrumental colour. The chalumeau, a predecessor of the clarinet, has a delicately sensuous tone that Telemann employs to haunting effect.

Collegium Musicum 90 maintain the high standard set by their previous Telemann disc. I warmly recommend the whole series. Graham Lock
