Tippett: Triple Concerto; Concerto for Orchestra

This supplement to Hickox’s Tippett symphony cycle features key works from the composer’s middle and late period, the luxuriance of the Triple Concerto (1979) contrasting with the harder-edged world of the Concerto for Orchestra (1963). Both are played magnificently by the Bournemouth SO, and the soloists in the later work, three members of the Chilingirian Quartet, are easily the equal of their rivals on competing discs from the composer (Nimbus) and Colin Davis (Philips) and the sound is superior to both.
