Vorisek/Arriaga

Vorísek and Arriaga composed one symphony apiece in the early 1820s. The Bohemian cast his in a classical mould, with a result that sounds a bit like Mozart subjected to the free melodic undulations of folk music. The Spaniard, who died before he was 20, could be mistaken for Rossini or even Mendelssohn. His symphony has the air of a theatrical overture, with a dramatic sensibility never far away. Mackerras, as you would expect, makes the SCO play these little-known pieces with as much reverence as established classics. Christopher Lambton
