WF Bach: Sinfonia in D, F64; Sinfonia in D minor, F65; Sinfonia in F, F67; Harpsichord Concerto in D; Suite in G minor

Wilhelm Friedemann, ‘the son I love, the one who fills me with joy’, JS Bach’s eldest child by his first marriage, was a hugely talented but unstable character, whose musical expectations were never, perhaps, fully realised. Tafelmusik’s programme demonstrates the expressive range of his music, its individual phraseology and inner tensions. The single concerto on the disc is for harpsichord and strings, one of four such pieces that he wrote.

Soloist Charlotte Nediger, fluent and sympathetic, captures the swift mood changes, sometimes restless and brilliant, at others dark-hued and brooding – a reflection perhaps of a mercurial, capricious temperament. Only a Suite in G minor, once attributed to JS Bach, is of doubtful authenticity. All in all, a stimulating release with the welcome inclusion of the emotionally charged Sinfonia in D minor consisting of a lyrically expressive Adagio and tautly constructed Fugue.
