Anon/White

These recordings from the Seventies are good. The 12th-century Play of Daniel receives an uncluttered performance, with fine singing and moments of real drama. But the lilting momentum of the music might be a mirage, since the original notation is unclear as to rhythm. The 16th-century work by Robert White is magnificent: sensitively paced and magisterial. The packaging is a disaster, implying that Daniel is by White and failing to say which of his two sets of Lamentations this is. Anthony Pryer
