WORKS: Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 5; Peterloo
PERFORMER: Bournemouth SO/Charles Groves, CBSO/Malcolm Arnold
CATALOGUE NO: CDM 5 66324 2 ADD 1973/77
Arnold writes so colourfully for the orchestra that it is tempting to overlook the cogency of his symphonic thinking. Groves commissioned the Symphony No. 2, and his deep love of the score is communicated in this vivid recording (1976), which has a magnificent sweep. The challenging Symphony No. 5 is satisfyingly performed, but does not match the power achieved by Hickox and the LSO. Peterloo, vividly portraying the infamous massacre, is well recorded and suitably dramatic. Terry Barfoot
