Bach: Suites for Solo Cello, BWV 1007. 1008, 1009, 1010, 1011, 1012

‘Classic’ is an over-used word for recordings of a certain age, but it is a most apt description for Fournier’s elegant, noble and truly poetic performances. In the 36 years since it was made, this recording has rarely been absent from the catalogue, and of the two dozen versions currently available it is the one I should least like to live without. The two discs have now been reissued in a slimline case at a slimmed-down price, making them irresistible. Kate Bolton
