Bach: Musikalisches Opfer

Harnoncourt’s lean presentation of Bach’s Musical Offering with members of Vienna Concentus Musicus may seem a little austere. However, I like the way he allows Bach’s cleverly conceived lines in the canons naturally to connect the masterly contrapuntal solutions of the two ricercares with the freer musical expression of the Trio. Ultimately, Herbert Tachezi’s robust harpsichord playing in the ricercares and stylish phrasing from everyone in the Trio produce a conversational equilibrium that satisfies heart and mind in equal measure.
