This compilation does, to a certain extent, show the breadth of Sviatoslav Richter’s supreme artistry. Here, in live recital recordings, are a mercurial Scriabin Fifth Sonata, a wonderful performance of Haydn’s beautiful G minor Sonata, some powerful Prokofiev and calmly liquid Debussy; and for me the highlight is the Bach, exquisitely pure and mystical. Unfortunately the whole compilation is marred by very inferior sound quality and much audience noise – not applause but coughing. So much so that Richter in the Bach is like the Buddha absorbed in meditation, undisturbed while storms rage mercilessly around him. But it’s infuriating for the rest of us. Jessica Duchen
