Bartok: Piano Concerto No. 1; Piano Concerto No. 2; Piano Concerto No. 3; Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion; Rhapsody; Scherzo

Sandór gave the world premiere of Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto in 1946 and brings a special intuitive authority to this repertoire. Sadly, the performances are severely let down by scrappy orchestral playing and emaciated sound. Sandór’s remakes of the concertos for Sony, or Géza Anda’s inspirational set for DG are far better propositions. Erik Levi
