Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 8 in G Op. 30/3; Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Op. 47 (Kreutzer); Violin Sonata No. 10 in G Op. 96

There’s no shortage of excellent Beethoven violin sonatas in the catalogue. But for sheer spontaneity, temperamental fire and 24-carat musicianship, you’d have to go far to find one quite as good as the Gruenberg/Wilde cycle in general, or the present disc of the last three (nearly breaking the 80-minute barrier) in particular. Gruenberg has an understanding and affection for this music that’s compelling. And in Wilde, an authentic Beethovenian, he has a magnificent partner. Beautifully balanced Bob Auger engineering, nostalgically bloomed. Strongly recommended. Ates Orga
