Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 5 in F (Spring); Violin Sonata No. 8 in G; Violin Sonata No. 9 in A minor (Kreutzer)

This disc is easy to recommend. The textural variety of the music is expressed with great concentration and musicality by Pinchas Zukerman and Daniel Barenboim, whose special relationship often produces imaginative results. Contrast, for example, the beautifully poised slow movement of the Spring Sonata with its sprightly scherzo. The tour de force, however, is the strong, positive performance of the Kreutzer. The EMI recording is well balanced. Nicholas Rast
