Ax produces performances of concentration and fine musicianship in the three pieces recorded here. In the Emperor, with Previn and the RPO, the balance is excellently judged. In the Choral Fantasia the ‘ live’ recording sound has some fuzzy edges, but Ax’s performance, solidly supported by Mehta and the New York Philharmonic and Chorus, is well worth sampling.
