Beethoven: Piano Trio in D, Op. 70/1 (Ghost); Piano Trio in B flat, Op. 97 (Archduke)

The Beaux Arts Trio has re-recorded Beethoven’s Archduke Trio each time its personnel has changed. This performance, by the long-standing partnership of Pressler, Cohen and Greenhouse, always seemed the ensemble’s finest, and it continues to fend off even its fiercest rivals. This playing has everything: polish, grandeur and impeccable refinement, plus that unhurried breadth of utterance that typified the Beaux Arts at its best. Also included here is its fine 1982 account of the Ghost. Impressive transfers add the finishing touches to an essential purchase. Michael Jameson
