Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor; Symphony No. 7 in A

Dated performances from the DG back-catalogue of two familiar warhorses. Rafael Kubelík has two of the world’s great orchestras at his command here, and so the musical integrity of these readings may be taken very much for granted. Less agreeable by far, however, is the sound quality of these transfers, which one assumes have been digitally reprocessed; the insert notes fail to clarify the point. With tape hiss and disappointingly congested climaxes to contend with, this scarcely passes muster, even at bargain price! Michael Jameson
