This collection of lesser-known works is very enjoyable and Thea King’s playing is excellent throughout, demonstrating both great insight into the various styles and a genuine commitment to this repertoire.

Bruch’s curiously underrated but lovely Concerto in E minor written for clarinet, viola and orchestra is especially worth hearing, though the orchestral transcriptions of Mendelssohn’s Konzertstücke, Opp. 113 & 114, are less convincing.

To complement her lyrical playing in the Bruch, King displays impressive virtuosity in the sets of variations by Spohr and Crusell. Tim Payne
