This enterprising recital champions some of the best of British music for the cello. The Rawsthorne Sonata is a splendid work and Arnold’s Fantasy is beautifully crafted, while Britten’s Third Suite is one of the most concentrated products of his final years.
Julian Lloyd Webber plays this often demanding repertoire with a real sense of dedication, partnered by the excellent John McCabe. The recordings produce an ideal balance and atmosphere, projecting the cello’s rich tone to satisfying effect. Terry Barfoot
