Collection: The World of Favourite Ballads

Older readers will remember these ballads being sung at home in ‘pre-television’ days. Benjamin Luxon, on top form, colours his voice splendidly to emphasise all the drama, pathos, sentiment and comedy of many old favourites such as ‘Bless This House’ and ‘I’ll Walk Beside You’.

Not so well known, perhaps, is Roger Quilter’s lovely ‘Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal’ and the marvellous comic pathos of ‘Give Me a Ticket to Heaven’ (a little child wants to follow her father to heaven by train so he won’t be lonely). Pity neither notes nor lyrics are included. Ian Lace
