CPE Bach: Flute Concerto in D minor; Cello Concerto in A

With all due respect to the impressive credentials of Rampal and Bex, both of whom perform their respective concertos with technical aplomb and musical sensitivity, it’s Boulez’s surprising foray into 18th-century repertoire that inevitably captures the spotlight. Fortunately, the great composer leaves us in no doubt of his commitment to the music – Allegros are driven at a fast and suitably manic pace, though his excessively Romantic approach to slow movements is less convincing.

The strident transfer does nothing to hide the rough and ready orchestral playing and, with its poor playing time, this disc is of only limited interest. Erik Levi
