Debussy/Ravel: String Quartets

The Alban Berg Quartet is technically flawless in this repertoire and is aided by a recording which does full justice to the players’ tone quality and sheer virtuosity. Dynamic shadings are keenly observed, but the outer movements of the Ravel could convey more tenderness. However it would be hard to find more exciting performances of the rhythmic aspects of these works, while the slow movements are notable for their rapt intensity. Terry Barfoot
