A third of this unusual and rewarding recital is devoted to lute music by Dowland; the translation to guitar of its elegant counterpoint, nimble dance rhythms and gende melancholy more than acceptable when realised as stylishly as here. Fernando Sor's Morceau de concert, Op. 54 and Sonate in C, Op. 15b provide an easy-going diversion to the early 19th-century, and the rest of die disc is devoted to appealing and individual pieces by the South American composers Barrios (La catedral/ Valse No. 3) and Ponce (Sonatina meridional).
