Despite his usual affinity with the Czech repertoire, Dorati’s way with Dvorák’s Slavonic Dances tends towards over-emphatic accents and furious tempi. When he relaxes, as in the sixth of the first set, the results are enjoyable. In most of the other dances his approach is hectoring and relentless. Though somewhat constricted, the 1958 sound shows up some enthusiastic, if not always perfectly tuned, orchestral playing. Those requiring subtlety and insight need look no further than SŠejna on Supraphon. Jan Smaczny
