LABELS: Philips Solo
WORKS: Slavonic Dances, Opp. 46 & 72
PERFORMER: Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra/Kurt Masur
CATALOGUE NO: 446 583-2 (1986)
Masur has a natural instinct for the Czech repertoire. His way with Dvorák’s Slavonic Dances is perceptive and unforced. Unlike many non-Czech conductors he doesn’t hammer the dance rhythms – the result is a graceful and genuine sense of the dance, especially in the later Op. 72 set. But everywhere Masur brings a penetrating intelligence to pieces which are far too often played routinely. SŠejna’s magnificent performance on Supraphon remains unbeatable, but Masur is well worth considering and the sound is better. Jan Smaczny
