Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 in G; Symphony No. 9 in E minor (From the New World)

These attractive interpretations of Dvorák’s two most famous symphonies at mid-price are well worth serious consideration. I could quarrel with the speed changes in the outer movements of the Eighth Symphony and some may find the Viennese Schmaltz lavished on its third movement over the top, but Maazel’s performance is full of affection and a real feeling for the work’s bright primary colours. The New World Symphony has an unfussy directness and the slow movement is touching without a hint of sentimentality.

The recording is a touch throaty, but it is credibly balanced and certainly more than acceptable. Jan Smaczny
