Elgar: String Quartet in E minor, Op. 83; Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84

It is puzzling that EMI has chosen to exhume this lifeless and mechanical recording. Surely they could have reissued more sympathetic, charming readings such as that by the Allegri Quartet with John Ogdon? My recommendation, if you want this coupling, is to invest the extra in the highly praised 1992 recording by the Medici Quartet with John Bingham – strong yet radiantly idyllic and wistful. Ian Lace
