A must for Elgarians; a treasure trove of little-known works. Delightful, introspective miniatures Dream Children and Elegy contrast with ceremonial and patriotic works like the Caractacus March. Carillon and Polonia, written during the Great War as contributions to charities in aid of occupied Belgium and Poland, have great immediacy – both glorious and stirring. The Imperial March of 1896, which catapulted Elgar to fame, is complemented by the Empire March written at the other end of his career (1924). Boult and the LPO are superb throughout and the Walton marches have never been celebrated better. Thoroughly recommended. Ian Lace
