Franck: Symphony in D minor; Violin Sonata in A; Symphonic Variations; Prélude, Choral and Fugue; Panis angelicus; Les Éolides

An ideally representative introduction to the music of César Franck, featuring several classic performances from the Sixties, now reissued in digitised sound. Arthur Grumiaux’s golden-toned account of the Violin Sonata emerges with model finesse and clarity. The D Minor Symphony and Les Éolides, from Van Otterloo and the Concertgebouw, again sound remarkably convincing, as does the 1970 Monaco recording of the Symphonic Variations. Other artists featured include José Carreras, Eduardo Del Pueyo and Pierre Cochereau. Reliable, if slightly dated performances, but variable sound quality.
