Froberger: Suites; Toccatas

The much travelled Froberger was a pioneer of German harpsichord music; he fashioned an idiomatic style that drew on the rich sonorities of Italian organists and the transparent textures of French lutenists. He studied with Frescobaldi and was a friend the lutenist Blancheroche (who died in Froberger’s arms after falling down some stairs in 1652). A Tombeau for Blancheroche and a Lamentation for Ferdinand III are the best known of these weighty, ornate pieces, all superbly played by Christophe Rousset. Graham Lock
