Haydn/Danzi/Rosetti

Hermann Baumann’s richly upholstered timbre and roomy vibrato is appropriate to authentic Strauss, not period Haydn. He’s dazzlingly secure, but Anthony Halstead’s Nimbus account of the Haydn comes much closer to the Empfindsamkeit spirit of the epoch. Franz Danzi’s E major concerto is delightful, and Baumann gives a Sturm und Drang-infused reading of the Rosetti (pen-name of Franz Anton Rössler). Technically brilliant, but stylistically Baumann is rather wide of the mark. Michael Jameson
