Haydn/Mozart: Nelson Mass; Coronation Mass K317

Haydn’s symphonic Nelson Mass is given a magisterial reading by Hickox, who – with an excellent quartet of soloists – manages to accommodate the extremes of joyfulness and menace, with the London Symphony Chorus incisive and dynamically sensitive. Cleobury’s account of Mozart’s Coronation Mass occasionally fails to pack sufficient punch, but Margaret Marshall gives the Agnus Dei an effortless lyricism.William Humphreys-Jones
