Hindemith, Bozza, Ropartz, Barat, Poulenc, Borden & Hall Lewis

Any disc featuring the solo trumpet-playing of the legendary Thomas Stevens, principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for over 25 years, is a must for the serious student. Of particular interest here is the Monophony VII for unaccompanied trumpet by Robert Hall Lewis, an arresting work displaying Stevens’s virtuosity and versatility. To a wider audience, however, this release probably has more limited appeal owing to the emphasis on rather weak French repertoire.

A previous issue (Crystal CD 665), with Stevens playing sonatas by Maxwell Davies and Antheil and Henze’s Sonatina, is a much stronger candidate for general consumption. Deborah Calland
