Holst/Barber/Elgar

These performances date as far back as 1967 (Elgar), and 1971 (Holst and Barber), but they hardly show their age. The recording of The Planets is especially impressive, capturing the massive climaxes of ‘Mars’ and the delicate impressionism of ‘Mercury’ with equal precision. Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic play superbly well throughout. Ivan Hewett
