Honegger: Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 3; Symphony No. 4; Symphony No. 5; Pacific 231; Rugby

Honegger is undoubtedly one of the finest symphonists of our century, and this well-recorded set is an attractive proposition for the discerning collector. The best performance is that of the First Symphony, whose taut, powerful rhythms are superbly delivered by the Bavarian orchestra. Dutoit directs the other works, too, with sureness of line and expression. Only No. 3 (Liturgique), lacking in symphonic weight and tension, falls below these high standards, though here too the playing and recording are very good. Terry Barfoot
