This excellent anthology would be worth the asking price for Mackerras’s performance of the Sinfonietta alone. Not only is it unique in being faithful to the composer’s intentions, it is passionately committed and superbly played by the Vienna Philharmonic. If not quite as riveting as Mackerras’s versions of the Sinfonietta and Taras Bulba, the remaining performances are extremely enjoyable and certainly recommendable. Huybrechts brings credible passion to Janácek’s early Lachian Dances as does Marriner to the Suite for Strings. Even more winning is an effervescent account of the wind sextet, Mládí (‘Youth’).
