Khachaturian/Glazunov

Khachaturian recorded the Spartacus and Gayaneh highlights at Abbey Road during his last visit to England in 1977. All the favourite numbers are here (the Adagio, Lezghinka, Sabre Dance), but in performances that seem bombastic and crude, even laboured, by comparison with his classic Vienna PO account (Decca). Tjeknavorian on RCA dramatises this music more persuasively. The Glazunov is routine, without much cutting edge or rhythmic bite. Ates Orga
