These are the usual adaptations of six of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano, freely transposed and extensively revised and orchestrated, mostly by Franz Doppler. Liszt was working on the traditional Rákóczy March long before Berlioz’s more famous version appeared. The Hungarian Battle March is the perfect final item. All this music, full-blooded as it is, needs assured handling, and it certainly receives it on this enjoyable disc, helped by EMI’s well-focused sound.Wadham Sutton
