Loewe: Ballades & Lieder

Lieder singers looking to expand their repertoire might do well to consider the songs of Schubert’s underrated contemporary Carl Loewe. His settings of often familiar poems by Goethe, Mörike, Rückert, among others, are dark, vivid and dramatic, full of Sturm und Drang, even sometimes witty, and offer marvellous opportunities for both singer and pianist. Recorded between 1969, when Fischer-Dieskau was at the height of his outstanding career, and 1982, when the voice was less bright but no less forceful, this excellent recital is a revelation.Claire Wrathall
