Lutoslawski: Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2; Musique funèbre; Symphonic Variations

This disc makes a perfect introduction to the music of Lutoslawski, the great Polish composer who died in February. The four works cover a span of nearly 40 years, from the early, delightful Symphonic Variations (1938) to the Second Symphony (1968). Nobody conducted this music better than the composer: these performances have an authority which more than makes up for the glassy, shallow sound. Ivan Hewett
