Madetoja: Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 3; Comedy Overture; Kullervo; The Ostrobothnians Suite; Okon Fuoko Suite

This two-disc set handily collects all the significant orchestral music of one of the leading Finnish composers of the post-Sibelius generation. It traces his development from an intelligent disciple of Sibelius, through the franker folkloric invention of The Ostrobothnians to the balanced Classicism of his later years and the colouristic invention of Okon Fuoko. Finlandia gives generous measure, with performances at least as idiomatic as those of the nearest rival in terms of repertoire, Sakari and the Iceland SO (on two full-price Chandos discs). Certainly worth considering. Calum MacDonald
